In S03E04 of Avatar, our boomerang guy became a swordsman.
I don't consider sword a weapon. You can see that Katara's bending was weakened when angry, but strengthened when calm or determined, and Zuko's fire was extremely hot when in anger. Water and fire are not weapons, but ways to talk to and feel Nature.
Born a nonbender, Sokka seems to be lacking "the something." But in this episode, we see the sword moving fluidly in the air, like the something he looked for all the time.
